Like a Whisper, Like a Siren

He hears it like an echo
Like the Gospel
Under lampposts
And I hear it too

And in the night now
Living after
Living since then,
Since the rapture
He keeps his hands in his pockets when he comes around.

And I know this for sure
We knew it from the feel
We knew it from the sound

And it comes now
Like a whisper
Like a siren
Only thicker
And I am wondering if one day I will understand

Why the strangeness
In a stranger
Why the nervous
In his anger
Is still enough to make me feel I am found

And I know this for sure
We knew it from the feel
We knew it from the sound

And it turns out the word wasn’t after all
Who to save and who to name to take the fall
We walk room-to-room, hand-in-hand
Climbing up the walls
Singing on, and on, and on.
